Queen Victoria Weekend in Cambridge, Ohio

Every year around the holidays, Cambridge, Ohio holds a themed weekend centered around a reenactment of a visit from Queen Victoria. This year, 'Queen Victoria Weekend' featured a reenactment of an authentic Victorian-era funeral ceremony in a window-lit hilltop mansion, where actors demonstrated some of the time period's bizarre traditions of mourning after a death.

Visitors enter the mansion.

Portraits from Highball

Halloween in Columbus means Highball, a celebration of fashion and Halloween, which attracts some incredible costumes from all over central Ohio and beyond. I tried something a little non-traditional, with some inspiration from my fellow photo intern, Kristen Zeis, who suggested video portraits (see the video here). It was certainly a blur of a night, and a learning experience about pacing myself and remembering to shoot plenty of stills in addition to video, all in one night.

Three down, Three to go

August was supposed to be my last month as an intern at the Dispatch. Although I now know I'll now be shooting for three or four more months, it's interesting to consider whether or not I would have been pleased with what I came away with, had I left after August as originally planned. I'll keep it simple by saying I'm thankful to have more time to work here
and a chance to fill in the gaps where I haven't yet succeeded. I'm partial to the pictures I shot in June, but every month has produced a different success to some extent. Working in a city for six months allows more time to revisit places, people or ideas a second or third time, until you get it right. Summer finished out with a lot of sports and some unique features, but now it's time to dive into the fall months which will mean Friday night lights, an abundance of pretty autumn features and busier daily work than I had in summer. Most importantly, it's time to figure out what exactly I need to accomplish before 2015 sneaks up one me as fast as September did.

People-less Pictures

One thing I'm excited to be getting practice with at the Dispatch is my lighting and technical skills. I've always enjoyed spending extra time setting up or composing a picture at an assignment every now and then, and I think I'll come away from this internship with a set of technically-sound pictures in addition to my usual "people" pictures. Next thing I hope to tackle this summer is portraiture.
